Valentino Retrospective

Before it closes in November Leigh & I got ourselves over to GOMA today for the Valentino retrospective.  As expected the gowns were amazing, the work in them incredible. It is such a shame Valentino showed his last collection in 2008, although the design house is still going with other designers in charge the pieces from the 2009/2010 collection on show were not a patch on the Valentino originals.  I loved seeing Jackie O's wedding dress from her marriage to Aristotle and Julia Roberts oscar gown.  All up the collection of gowns was stunning and Valentino's work seems to be pretty timeless, it was hard to believe that many of the gowns on display were from the 50's & 60's when they would not look out of place on a red carpet today.

The only thing that spoiled my time was the amazing rudeness and bad manners of the general public.  I do not know how many times today I got pushed by people barging through or trying to get in front of me, people standing around just having a chat in front of exhibits not moving on when they had finished and my very favourite - several people standing in front of exhibits and texting!  Unfortunately you were not allowed to take photos (or I would have been looking up a good dressmaker to make me some Valentino inspired items!)  Here are some photos I have found of gowns included in the exhibit:

Dress worn by Liz Taylor to Spartacus premiere 1961

Christina Onassis wedding dress 1973

The red dress is the first dress on display when you arrive hard to believe these are from 1959/1960

The bead work in this was just beautiful in person and is lost on camera as well as the intricate design of the jackets lining

In background: front of Julia Roberts 2001 Oscar dress which was from a 1982 collection

This dress was a favourite in person but again the detail is lost on camera, beautiful beading on the top of the dress and the large black folds with red lining on the back were a great detail

The jacket of this piece is made of petals of fabric, it looks like pleats at first but on closer inspection it is indiviual petals of fabric

Another example of intricate beadwork

Yellow floral dress from the collection of Audrey Hepburn

Cate Blanchett's 2005 Oscar dress and in the back Nicole Kidman's dress from the London premiere of Far & Away 1992

The dress on the far left of this picture was another favourite in person a silver grey with lace inserts and intricate bodice with a half over skirt of tiny ruffles
